Swallowfield Show 2011

Swallowfield Show 2011

As usual, the late August Bank holiday weekend played host the the annual Swallowfield Show, now in its 127th year. Once again, the club had the marquee in what seemed to be its usual place. Thanks to Mark Ashley for the loan of the marquee. Last year was the first time that the club displayed two tanks with coarse fish supplied by Martin Moore of Moore & Moore Carp Ltd along with a bucket of Signal Crayfish caught from the Thames. These certainly created some interest among the visitors, and so the principal remained the same for the the 2011 show. This time however, only one larger tank was used for the fish display which featured, Tench, Carp, Bream, Perch, Pike, Rudd, Gudgeon & Minnows. As Well as the fish, there were specimen trays of pond life such as snails, water boatmen, diving beetles, leeches, damsel fly nymphs and water lice to name but a few. The slightly unexpected display of some 2-3 month old Crucian Carp from the Decoy Pond were shown that had been caught in the weed when the insect life had been collected for the display.

Overall, the show proved a success once again, although the showers on the Sunday slowed the crowds a.little. Come Monday though, there were times during thew day when there was hardly room to move within the marquee. Both children and adults alike came to see what was on display and chat about what could be seen. Plenty of information was given out over the two days, so the next couple off weeks might see a return on our efforts.

A big thanks you to Martin Moore once again, who seemed to enjoy himself, for his time, effort and knowledge on the questions from the public and to the various members who took the trouble to help out, promote the club and clear away after the weekends event.
